When you think of Sailors you instantly visualize the Military version of the Sailor. In reality there are many varieties of sailors, some are on Yachts, some are on sail boats, some are on ferries, some are on cruise liners. Still others ply the seas day in and day out on freighters. The last classification of sailors are know as merchant marines who work on privately owned vessels that supply the world with raw materials, food, and finished goods. Because of the length of time at sea, some of these Sailors have adopted pets. Sometimes these pets are identified as mascots in order to justify their presence onboard the ship. But they still serve the purpose of providing entertainment to the lonely sailor at sea. Sometimes the Sailors would dress up their pets much like a child would dress up their dolls. Perhaps this is what lead to the modern day Halloween costume for pets.
