I used to wonder why parents would have a 1st birthday party for their children. I mean, a one year old is never going to remember a birthday party at that age. Once I became a father, my opinion of having a 1st birthday party changed. When your baby turns a year old, it almost seems like a party to celebrate the fact that the parents survived one precise year of being sleep deprived, stressed and frazzled. It also symbolizes that fact that your baby, seemingly once without a personality, is heading towards becoming a toddler, with a very defined personality. That 1st birthday party almost is a rite of passage for both babies and parents alike. But who in the world do you invite to a 1st birthday party? Your child isn’t old enough to pick and choose a guest list. They don’t have playmates that they hang out with quite yet. Seeing as a 1st birthday party is more for the grown-ups surrounding the birthday child, the guest list should primarily consist of friends and family. If your child does regularly play with other children at a daycare center or in some other atmosphere, perhaps you would like to invite them as well. However, keep in mind that having too many children in one place at one time could lead to chaos. If you’re up for it, have the children at a separate time than your friends and family members. While it is tradition at a 1st birthday party for the child to demolish a cake and smear their hands and face in the sugary icing, think with some common sense before you decide to invoke this photographic moment. Why allow your child to ruin an entire cake with their curious hands? In recent years, parents have opted for giving the 1st birthday party guest of honor a small cupcake. It not only limits the amount of mess that can be made, but it also limits the amount of sugar that your child will be putting into their little systems. If you do opt for a theme, it should, of course, be a child oriented theme. Maybe their favorite cartoon character, if they have one, or something fun and adorable, such as Sesame Street or Winnie the Pooh. It isn’t hard to find decorations for such themes and lots of invitations to match. Most importantly, make sure that you get a candle in the shape of the number 1 for on top of the cake. If it fares well, it could be a wonderful keepsake. You could also take the opportunity at a 1st birthday party to get some great photos of your friends and family. Be sure to get a picture of each party attendant with the guest of honor.
